Stapleton International goes from strength to strength

Over the last five years, Stapleton has pursued an international expansion programme which has resulted in established offices in the USA and Asia, with Asia now the most profitable and fastest growing division of the company. This growth has attracted high calibre individuals to the business and their impact on the future plans of Stapleton is set to lead Stapleton into new markets in the Middle East, Australia, South America and other strategically important locations in the worldwide energy construction market.

Whilst a number of companies are facing cutbacks and redundancies, Stapleton is looking towards a period of continued growth, and this is a direct result of its strategy over the last 5 years to diversify its markets both geographically and in terms of its areas of expertise. Stapleton is now providing Cost, Planning and other services across the whole lifetime of a project, including the post project area of Dispute Resolution and Claims for which Stapleton is better known.

Stapleton Group Managing Director Bob Breeze attributes this success to the dedication and hard work of the staff, “In the last 5 years, Stapleton has grown from 20 to 70 staff comprising Quantity Surveyors, Planning Engineers, Project Managers and Technical Support Staff, all of whom have been recruited for their extensive experience and practical knowledge of the construction industry together with a high level of academic qualification. Our business success is based on the integrity and professionalism of our people, and I have personal confidence in every member of the team.”

The growth of the business is indisputable. Turnover has increased from £3million to £7 million and is targeted to reach £10 million by the end of 2009. The business expects to employ 100 people by the end of next year. It is, however, committed to maintaining its focus as a niche consultancy, avoiding a generalist approach and continuing to develop its growing international reputation as the key specialist in their field.

The company’s Head Office has been based in Darlington since the early 1980s and there are no plans to change that. As Mr Breeze puts it, “Darlington was chosen for its strategic proximity to the North East off-shore fabrication yards and we are still working on a major project here today with the Tees Alliance Group. Darlington also benefits from excellent transport links via rail and air which is vital for an international business. Excellent communications, a highly skilled workforce and a nucleus of high oil and gas expertise in and around Teesside brought us here, and will keep us here.”

The strategic development plans will involve new offices around the world. Perth in Western Australia is set to be the next office to open, closely followed by Mumbai in India and Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates. Mr Breeze is clear about the need for the business to remain responsive “Having offices strategically placed around the world allows us to service clients with multiple international interests, and to do it well. Above all else, Stapleton is committed to working with the right people – both its clients and its staff.”
